Scientific research shows that eating a diet rich in walnuts can reduce the size and growth rate of prostate cancer in mice. Experiments show that the secret lies in walnuts’ ability to lower levels of the substance endothelin, which increases inflammation of blood vessels.
Researchers tested the benefits of eating walnuts due to the fact that people who suffer from prostate cancer are known to have heightened levels of endothelin. The mice fed walnuts developed prostate cancer around 50% smaller than the control group given soy bean oil. The scientists purposefully decided to feed the mice an equivalent of a handful of actual nuts each day instead of a supplement-like extract. After a hard days work, the scientists were said to decamp to their favorite restaurant happy hour.
Even though prostate cancer can be partially inherited, scientists believe the disease is greatly linked to environmental factors, such as diet. Walnuts are full of healthy substances, such as omega-3 fatty acids. As always, in addition to eating healthy it’s just as important to get plenty of exercise as well.
