Alcohol and Low Testosterone: Excessive Drinking Can Lower Testosterone

Alcohol and Low Testosterone: Excessive Drinking Can Lower Testosterone

A compilation of recent studies at HubPages.com supports the idea that alcohol abuse and consumption in men causes low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.  For many years, excessive drinking is proven to have harmful effects on men’s health.

Alcohol drinking can cause low testosterone and impotence when consumed in high amounts. Since alcohol is a depressant, the effects of alcohol slow down the blood flow to the penis which in turn affects testosterone levels. As a result, alcoholic drinkers suffer from  the serious effects of low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.

Studies show that alcohol intoxication in men causes low testosterone levels.  Alcohol affects the endocrine system and damages the testes’ ability to produce testosterone. Oftentimes, alcoholic men experience erection problems since it can affect testosterone levels.

Department of Mental Health and Alcohol Research, experts suggest that men should avoid heavy drinking to the point of impairment, limiting consumption to three drinks in one setting. Alcohol and low testosterone affect men’s capacity to maintain a satisfying sexual life. Low testosterone levels have been associated with depression, decreased bone and muscle mass, and low sex drive.

German scientists found that simply having an erection promotes testosterone production. Hence, low testosterone and ED treatment is necessary to improve men’s sexual health.

Alcohol also causes sleep disturbance at night. It greatly affects the REM phase in the sleep cycle. The REM phase is necessary for a night full of refreshing sleep. Most specialists speculate that sleep deprivation can cause higher testosterone levels during the day than in the nighttime. Ideally, men should have 7-8 hours of restful sleep to attain higher levels of testosterone.

Alcohol and low testosterone in men can create serious health threat for some time since it disrupts the body’s ability to produce testosterone. Aside from disturbed sleeping patterns,  alcohol has detrimental effects on erectile function. Oftentimes, men suffer from poor libido, sex drive, and sexual dysfunction.

Since testosterone is the primary sex hormone for males, a normal testosterone level has a huge impact on a man’s life. Avoid excessive drinking and moderate intake of alcohol. You should also promote adequate sleep to help increase testosterone levels. Moderate alcohol consumption can help you with your condition. Therefore, a lifestyle free from vices will help prevent low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.

There are also treatment options that you can do to help with your low testosterone. There’s testosterone replacement therapy, it’s a hormone replacement therapy that includes testosterone pellets. They’re roughly the size of a grain of rice, and they’ll be implanted under the skin by a doctor. These pellets contain crystalline testosterone and provide a consistent, modest dose of the hormone to the user for up to 4 months. Also, take note that men with prostate cancer shouldn’t take testosterone because it can fuel cancer growth.
